Our case studies present real operations carried out by NT Service GmbH – including specific requirements, challenging hazard situations and professional execution. Each case study demonstrates how we reliably and compliantly manage safety critical specialist operations.
At a fire protection control centre operated by Wacker Chemie AG in Burghausen, a foam agent tank including pipelines, fittings and internal tank surfaces had to be cleared of hazardous PFAS residues. According to laboratory analysis, the existing values were significantly above the legal limits, with more than 500 µg/kg of PFOA in the old foam concentrate. The target value was below 25 µg/kg.
Wacker Chemie AG, operator of an industrial fire protection system at the Burghausen site.
Complete decontamination of a stationary foam agent tank including the associated infrastructure. The work was carried out under the supervision of publicly appointed expert Matthias Natusch, with the objective of achieving laboratory compliant cleaning below the statutory detection limit. A multi stage process based on physico chemical mechanisms was used, continuously refined and tested in practice.
PFAS and PFC compounds are considered persistent, toxic and potentially carcinogenic. They enter the environment through contaminated firefighting water and can pollute groundwater for decades. Even the smallest residues within a system may lead to exceedances of statutory limit values. Handling these substances requires the highest level of care, specialised procedures and appropriate protective equipment.
After an initial visual and chemical pre cleaning, the tank was entered by our specialists wearing protective equipment. All relevant system components – including pipelines, tank walls, fittings and floor areas – were manually decontaminated. Specially developed tools, coordinated cleaning procedures and a combined rapid and laboratory testing method were used for the step by step monitoring of PFC/PFAS contamination levels.
The final evaluation was carried out by an accredited testing laboratory based on sampling in accordance with our internal decontamination guideline. The results of the laboratory analysis were provided four days after completion of the operation.
Following decontamination, the PFAS values were significantly below the legal limit values – according to laboratory analysis, even below 1 µg/kg for PFOA and PFAS (C14). The operation was therefore successfully completed, and the fire protection control centre was returned to operation without restrictions.
To protect the specialists involved, NT Service GmbH applies exceptionally strict safety standards. In addition to protective suits and certified work procedures, all specialists regularly undergo voluntary PFC blood analyses. This measure exceeds statutory requirements and reflects our commitment as a responsible specialist company.
The operation at Wacker Chemie AG demonstrates how PFAS residues can be reliably and permanently reduced below the detection limit, even in highly sensitive industrial environments.
