Glucose tank cleaning: operation in the food industry

At Trolli GmbH, a German confectionery manufacturer, a large-volume glucose tank was to be fully cleaned and assessed for the first time. The challenge: technical cleaning had not previously been possible because the system did not provide safe structural access. However, hygiene requirements demanded complete, documented disinfection of the internal tank surfaces.

The assignment

Complete cleaning, disinfection and assessment of a glucose tank that had never previously been fully treated. The objective was hygienically flawless recommissioning, including documented evaluation of all surfaces. The work was carried out under the supervision of a state-certified food technologist and implemented by a specialist team using rope access techniques.

The hazard situation

Food production systems are subject to the strictest requirements for hygiene, occupational safety and documentation. Residues, biofilms or uncontrolled disinfectant residues can lead to microbiological contamination. Improper cleaning not only poses health risks but can also result in official shutdowns. At the same time, access was technically demanding and could only be achieved by experienced rope access technicians.

The procedure

The cleaning team used a multi-stage process consisting of mechanical pre-cleaning, disinfection and final assessment using the CP luminescence method. This proven technique enables precise microbial load assessment on the treated surfaces. Access was provided via rope-based entry systems. All work was carried out under hygienic conditions and under the supervision of the food technologist. Even hard-to-access areas such as manhole covers, floor curvature and fitting bases were fully treated and documented.

The result

After cleaning was completed, the glucose tank was recommissioned in a hygienically flawless condition. The assessment using the CP luminescence method confirmed a consistently low microbial load across all surfaces. Thanks to the combination of technical expertise, rope access and food-specific specialist knowledge, the operation was completed successfully and within the planned timeframe.
